Millions of pounds every year are being paid out to UK teachers following claims of personal injury and accidents at work. The total amount paid in the last year was a staggering £8,764,337. Many compensation claims made have stemmed from serious injuries occurring on school premises.

In 2009 Sharon Lewis, a 31 year old special needs teacher, was jumped on by a pupil who compressed her spinal chord and damaged nerves around her shoulder, she was also diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder following the assault, and will never again be able to return to teaching full time. Miss Lewis, who was working for Woodlands school, Aspley, Nottingham when the incident happened has been awarded £279,708

It is thought to be the highest paid personal injury compensation claim to date so far for compensation claims made by teachers.

Statistics show that the number of claims made by teachers are on the increase, these have included slips, trips and falls.

£40,000 was paid out in a compensation claim made by a teacher who sustained a wrist injury due to a door banging shut.

Other personal injury compensation claims made in the last year also include a teacher from the West Midlands who attempted to stop two pupils fighting and in doing so she injured her shoulder in the process, she was awarded £112,000. On two other separate occasions reported last year, two teachers were awarded £43,881 and £180,000 in compensation claims for incidents that resulted in them being assaulted at work.
