Accident and injury claims are on the rise currently in the UK and this means that businesses of all types need to be on their guard in terms of meeting with health and safety requirements. As a result of this, it is the case that many businesses are facing upward spiralling compliance costs when it comes to ensuring that they meet all health and safety standards. The costs involved with not meeting these standards could also lead to further legal costs, which many firms cannot afford to shoulder not just because of the financial obligations involved, but also because of the potential reputational damage. In particular, between 2008 and 2009, accident at work figures were quite staggering as there were over 131,000 injuries suffered by workers in the workplace according to the Health and Safety Executive.
Furthermore, according to the Labour Force Survey there were over 246,000 reportable injury cases. All these statistics point to the fact that personal injury compensation claim figures are also on the rise. In addition to this, according to the Health and Safety Executive, last year, there were around 1.2 million people who were suffering from an illness that came about as a result of their work activities. In the light of all these statistical figures, it can be said that more needs to be done by the government to tighten health and safety standards in order to curb these rising figures in accidents and injuries and to avoid what some have termed the growth of ‘personal injury claim’ culture in the UK.
