An article on the Daily Telegraph website this week has revealed the ten most expensive road traffic accident incidences involving powerful supercars.
Topping the list was an historic 1962 Ferrari race car worth nineteen million pounds, which was damaged when its British owner ran into another car whilst in congested traffic.
The article featured three further Ferraris involved in major road traffic accident cases – the first being a six million pound Ferrari 250 Spyder damaged by a Californian hurricane, the second was a million pound 1959 Ferrari wrecked when it crashed into a wall during a historic racing event, and the third a Ferrari Enzo belonging to businessman Bo Stefan Eriksson. New research released in Scotland has shown that police forces within the country are shelling out thousands of pounds in accident claims.
The data unveiled that personal injury compensation claim cases made by Scotland’s biggest police force alone, Strathclyde Police, had cost the organisation more than two hundred and fifty five thousand pounds in 2008 and 2009. The cases resulted in wounds sustained by officers whilst travelling in police vehicles and damage to those cars, or injuries inflicted on civilians that were either travelling in police machinery or that came into contact with them.
Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary shelled out eleven thousand pounds, whilst a further eleven thousand pounds was paid out in accident claims by Lothian and Borders Police in third party injuries. Lothian police also paid out one hundred thousand pounds in (more…)

An article published on the Daily Telegraph’s website this week has revealed some of the most bizarre compensation claims that have resulted in payouts from UK councils.
Among the accident claims submitted are a £3.95 compensation sum paid to a person by Barnet council for ‘damage to trousers as a result of dry cleaning’, along with a ten pound payout to somebody that hit their head on a low sign.
The data, which was uncovered as the result of a Freedom of Information request, also showed examples of a council in Canterbury paying twenty pounds to a person for damage sustained to their shoe, or Aberdeenshire compensation claims to the tune of eight pounds for an unexplained ‘grass cutting incident’.

A promising young athlete was badly injured when a fork-lift collided with his leg.
Stuart Harlowe was on his way to becoming a top level competitor in the high jump, with dreams of winning his place in the team for the next Olympics when the accident happened.
At the time of the incident, Mr Harlowe was 17 years of age. Between training sessions he was working part time for a local courier service, trying to make some extra money. While working he was delivering a package to a local distribution warehouse. Upon arrival he was instructed by the duty manager in charge that he was to deliver the package to the rear of the building.
As Mr Harlowe walked to the rear of the warehouse he was struck in the right leg by a passing fork-lift. The front of the vehicle rammed his leg and shattered the shin bone in several places. He was immediately taken to hospital. Describing the accident, Mr Harlowe said, “I knew straight away it was really bad, the pain was unbearable”.
Unable to walk, let alone train, Mr Harlowe was in a cast, and subsequent rehabilitation for over a year. Suffering from extreme pain even after short periods of time on his feet, Mr Harlowe was forced to give up his dreams of reaching the Olympics. He is now forced to seek (more…)

A disabled man is considering making a claim for compensation after he suffered an accident while on his mobility scooter. The man, aged 60, was travelling on his mobility scooter on a road in Romford when he hit a pothole, causing him to come off his scooter.
The man was merely crossing the road at the time, and the accident was enough for him to be thrown from his scooter, leaving him bleeding in the road. The man, Spencer Pindus, suffers from multiple sclerosis and requires his mobility scooter in order to get around.

A high court judge ruled this week that compensation claims by customers of Land of Leather, who claimed they had experienced burns and rashes as a result of buying sofas from the firm, will not receive any payouts.
Customers believe that the sofas purchased from Land of Leather, who are no longer trading as a company, were ‘toxic’ and caused serious injuries to anyone who sat on them. Personal injury claims were made by some 300 customers of Land of Leather, however a high court judge ruled in favour of the former sofa giant.
The sofas in question were manufactured in China and they were also sold by Argos and Walmsley Furnishing. According to reports from the Guardian, over 4,000 people have experienced injury from using them. The problems with the sofas came from a (more…)

New research by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has revealed that insurers have been forced to pay out more than 650 million pounds over the winter in accident claims due to the extreme winter weather conditions.
According to the BBC website, between 18 December 2009 and 13 January 2010, British insurance companies have paid a multi-million pound sum to UK residents for damage caused to their cars, homes and businesses due to the ice and snow that affected large parts of the country.
The most common form of accident claims that resulted in payment were caused by road traffic accident cases in which vehicles were damaged and personal injuries occurred from crashes on icy roads.
