A former professional footballer is facing a claim for injury compensation after he attacked and beat up a woman who worked in a taxi booking office.
The footballer, former Nottingham Forrest player Gary Charles, could be forced to pay out a five figure compensation claim to his victim, 46 year old Elizabeth Wedge. Ms Wedge says she has suffered both emotionally and physically since the attack in September 2005.
Gary Charles received a nine month suspended sentence for his actions in 2006, however just 12 months later he was jailed after he assaulted a doorman outside a pub while drunk.
Ms Wedge stated about her anguish:
I’ve lost my job through this and not worked since the attack. I’m on incapacity benefit and disability living allowance.
My solicitor has written to him a number of times about compensation but he has not responded.
The assault happened after Ms Wedge remarked to Mr Charles:
You can’t be that good – you never played for Manchester United.
After which Gary Charles punched and kicked her in the face.
Imagine him kicking a football, that’s how he was kicking me in the face.
Ms Wedge’s personal injury lawyer, Andrew Botham, added:
Proceedings have been issued and Mr Charles has not filed any sort of response. If this continues a judge will decide on liability and, if proven, the level of compensation.
