gary-charles1Former professional footballer Gary Charles is to contest the compensation claim that has been made against him after he assaulted a woman in a taxi office in 2005. The footballer attacked the woman after she made a comment about him not being good enough to have played for Manchester United.

The woman, forty-six year old Elizabeth Wedge, suffered physical and emotional injury after the assault where Gary Charles punched and kicked her.

Charles was given a suspended sentence for the assault, but later went to prison for another incident. The claim for compensation is due to be heard in November in Derby.

Despite Ms Wedge’s claim for compensation and her injuries suffered, Charles defends his actions:

I regret going out that night and putting myself in a vulnerable position.

My barrister suggested an appeal against the conviction but I wanted to move on. It does cross my mind that I should have appealed.
