The residents of the town of Morden, Surrey, are hailing a local nurse as a hero after she rescued a man and a woman from a car crash on the A24 Epsom Road.
Lucy Jay Bellinger, 24, a nurse at Kingston Hospital, was off-duty at her home when an estate car travelling down her road flipped over onto its roof, trapping a couple in their 20s inside the wreckage.
Eye-witnesses have been describing how the young nurse ran out of her house opposite the scene of the accident and pulled the victims clear of the wrecked car. She then proceeded to administer first aid with the assistance of a consultant from St. George’s Hospital, who was also nearby at the time of the crash, while they waited for the ambulance crews to arrive.
The crash victims have since been taken to hospital, though it is thought any injuries they sustained are not serious.
The fire brigade initially stated that another car was also involved in the accident, but only one damaged vehicle has been reported at the scene at this time. The A24 remains closed while the investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash continues, with fire, police and ambulance crews still present at the scene.
Despite the praise heaped on her for her selfless action, Ms Bellinger remains modest:
“This is the sort of thing I do on a daily basis so it’s nothing special to me. I guess I was just doing my job.”
