Compensation Claim

Injured prisoner receives £4.7 million compensation

A former prisoner has made a successful personal injury compensation claim after he was left with long-term medical conditions resulting from falling off his bunk bed whilst in incarceration.

41 year old Ryan St George fell from the top bunk to the concrete floor, which resulted in him having an epileptic seizure, whilst he was serving a four month sentence for theft.

The seizure lasted for more than an hour and a half and the prison officials failed to call an ambulance for forty minutes following the start of his epileptic attack – something that St George experienced regularly due to a long history of alcohol and drug abuse.

As a result of the incident, St George suffered severe personal injury to the head and the lack of oxygen flowing to his brain during the attack also caused brain damage, leaving him unable to walk, among other health effects. This has left the former inmate in need of expensive round the clock care from medical professionals.

In a compensation claims hearing, the judge in question ruled that the extent of Mr St George’s injuries were 85 percent due to the failure of the Home Office, a percentage that was increased following an appeal by the victim.

As a result, Ryan St George has been awarded a £4.7 million lump sum for his personal injury compensation claim. The Home Office will also pay the annual rent on his family home, where his elderly aunt now cares for him, in the compensation package.
