It seems incredible but insurance on bicycles now rivals the cost of insurance for cars due to the level of cover offered by insurance companies. When a motorist takes out car insurance they’re offered such services as cover for accidental damage and a courtesy car while their vehicle is being repaired. Cyclists are also offered the same services on their top level insurance products.

One insurance company also offers personal injury cover with their bicycle insurance product, which considering the level of accidents involving cyclists, especially in inner city locations, is a good idea.

The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) offers a bicycle insurance policy that also covers breakdown assistance and a recovery service.

An ETA spokesperson added:

Just as with any other type of insurance, it is vital that people shop around – many cyclists are paying over the odds for the extras that we include for free.
