North West England Is Worst For ‘Crash for Cash’ Scams

Categories: Direct Line,Road Traffic Accident (RTA) | Written by Paul on May 5, 2010

Research has indicated that the North West is the UK’s hotspot for fraudulent whiplash claims.

Insurers Direct Line said that the top five locations for fraudsters to stage an accident in order to submit a personal injury compensation claim are in the North. So called ‘crash for cash’ schemes involve the fraudster performing an emergency stop, usually at a busy slip road or roundabout, causing the driver behind to crash into them. That driver, who is the real victim, is then held liable. The fraudster then submits a claim to the victim’s insurance company for bogus injuries such as whiplash. (more…)

A wounded solder’s £25,000 personal injury compensation claim could be under threat after he was captured on television carrying a trophy at a major football match.

Private Dave Tatlock received the sum after suffering shrapnel wounds whilst serving in Afghanistan during Summer 2008. The incident left him with serious nerve damage in his legs, including no movement in his left foot, leaving him unable to walk without the aid of splints.

He sought compensation after taking out a £56 per week health insurance policy, and successfully managed to receive a £25,000 payout for the affect his injuries have had on his lifestyle.

However, Pte Tatlock was pictured earlier this year carrying the Carling Cup trophy onto the pitch during a football match involving his favourite team, Manchester United, at Wembley Stadium. These images were seen by (more…)

Leading insurance provider the AA has claimed that many drivers are now facing annual insurance premiums of more than one thousand pounds as a result of the increasing number of accident claims being lodged.

In the final quarter of 2009, the AA reported a rise of more than seven percent on the average cost of car insurance policies – a record increase over a three month period. This has led to some drivers having to fork out more than a thousand pounds during the course of a year in order to cover their car insurance costs.

The result was even higher on price comparison websites, whose average results turned in a rise of almost thirteen percent on comprehensive insurance cover and third party, fire and theft premiums. Overall, some motorists have (more…)

Young drivers are reluctant to report accidents

Categories: Insurance Companies,Road Traffic Accident (RTA) | Written by Paul on April 3, 2010

Young drivers aged under 25 in the UK are less likely to claim compensation should they be involved in a road traffic accident than those of the same age in another European country, according to car insurance company AXA.

The research carried out throughout Europe revealed that almost a third (30%) of youthful Britons are more reluctant to make a car insurance claim in the event of a crash than young drivers in Spain, France and Germany.

However, the survey also detected that young people in the UK are more law abiding than their EU counterparts, as only a quarter admitted to speeding on a motorway – a much lower figure than the European (more…)

False insurance claims rising

New research by an insurance company has revealed that fraudulent accident claims are on the rise as a result of the current difficult economic climate.

The research, carried out by LV, has unveiled that four in ten solicitors have experienced questionable insurance claims since the UK entered an economic recession, as many households struggle to make ends meet in the event of pay freezes and redundancies. Over half the false claims submitted related to a road traffic accident, where the supposed victim exaggerated injuries in order to make a whiplash claim or similar health condition related payout.

One of the most serious incidences reported was where a person claimed they had been knocked down by a (more…)

A high court judge ruled this week that compensation claims by customers of Land of Leather, who claimed they had experienced burns and rashes as a result of buying sofas from the firm, will not receive any payouts.

Customers believe that the sofas purchased from Land of Leather, who are no longer trading as a company, were ‘toxic’ and caused serious injuries to anyone who sat on them. Personal injury claims were made by some 300 customers of Land of Leather, however a high court judge ruled in favour of the former sofa giant.

The sofas in question were manufactured in China and they were also sold by Argos and Walmsley Furnishing. According to reports from the Guardian, over 4,000 people have experienced injury from using them. The problems with the sofas came from a (more…)

New research by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has revealed that insurers have been forced to pay out more than 650 million pounds over the winter in accident claims due to the extreme winter weather conditions.

According to the BBC website, between 18 December 2009 and 13 January 2010, British insurance companies have paid a multi-million pound sum to UK residents for damage caused to their cars, homes and businesses due to the ice and snow that affected large parts of the country.

The most common form of accident claims that resulted in payment were caused by road traffic accident cases in which vehicles were damaged and personal injuries occurred from crashes on icy roads. This damage bill, which currently stands at around 395 million pounds, continues to rise even after the snowy weather has eased, as an increasing number of (more…)
