A man who was abused as a child by his scoutmaster is seeking compensation for the emotional distress caused by his attacker. 64 year old Roy Mercer was jailed in 2007 for six years. Now the man he assaulted is seeking a compensation claim in the region of £100,000.
The man is now 43 and is one of three children who were sexually abused by Roy Mercer. During his trial Mercer admitted 31 different cases of sexual assault against the three children in a 30 year period.
The man claims that the Scout Association should be held “vicariously liable” for the acts that he was forced to go through at the hands of Roy Mercer.
The Scout Association is expected to defend the claim, denying any liability for the sexual assaults.
Another of Mercer’s victims is also considering proceeding with a claim for compensation against Mercer, despite having already received compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.
The man added:
I have to get on with my life and I have lived with this for a long time. It made a lot of difference to go to court and see Mercer jailed.
