kayla-lee-purdieA girl who was attacked by a yob outside her own home is to receive £1,500 compensation from her assailant for the injuries she suffered. The yob smashed a brick into the face of fifteen-year-old Kayla-Lee Purdie, breaking her jaw and her cheekbone. The girl is now permanently scarred from the assault.

The attack happened on May 3rd last year, outside Kayla-Lee’s home in Edinburgh. The girl’s attacker, twenty-two-year-old George Ewing pleaded guilty to the attack and was sentenced to just 225 hours of community service.

As a result of the attack the teenage girl now has keep her hair long and wear special make-up to hide the scar.

The assault happened as Ewing and his friends were returning home from a night out. They were creating a disturbance outside the teenager’s home, when her parents went outside to challenge the drunken youths.

A fight broke out between the drunken youths and Ms Purdie’s parents, when fifteen-year-old Kayla-Lee got out of bed to help her parents. While she stood by watching she was struck in the face with a brick by Mr Ewing.

Kayla-Lee Purdie stated:

I was just standing watching, I didn’t know what to do and I was afraid.

I just saw a flash of yellow and green coming in from the side and at first I thought I had been punched.

I didn’t think I had been knocked out but now I can’t really remember much until I was taken back into my home.

My cheek was covered in blood and I was shaking and very cold.

Teen attacked by yobAs a result of the assault Kayla-Lee has a permanent scar on her face, has lost partial feeling and also has to make up a year’s worth of study for an exam that she missed.

I was worried that my face would never look the same again.

I was afraid to go out in case I bumped into him and my self-confidence was pretty low. I stopped going out with my friends and was afraid to be in the house alone.

Ewing escaped without a custodial sentence after his employer spoke in his favour. The Sheriff, Fiona Reith, said that community service and personal injury compensation was sufficient, although a jail sentence was merited for the crime.
