Massive payouts for school children hurt in accidents

School children in the Lothians in Scotland have received £125,000 in personal injury compensation in the past five years. Accidents range from the very minor, such as ripped school uniforms, to accidents in the playground, such as head injuries.

More serious injuries such as broken bones and head injuries have received £10,765 in compensation.

The councils have also been sued after children lost or damaged property such as mobile phones and jewellery. The most amount of money, £62,825, was paid out in compensation by Edinburgh council for just 28 cases of injury and four cases of property damage or theft.

In addition to the compensation paid out to school children, teachers have also received compensation for injuries, but they have received much more in total. £200,000 has been paid out to Scottish school teachers for injuries over the years.

Personal injury lawyer Angus Logan spoke about the difficulties in processing injury compensation claims against councils:

I find council insurers to be terribly slow.

They don’t admit liability and take months to make a decision. They would pay out less if they settled cases early and they did not invite litigation. I think it’s probably a misguided attempt to save money in the wrong places.
