Compensation payouts in relation to inept surgery at Barnsley Hospital have been mounting. As reported in the Yorkshire Post, there has been a rash of compensation claims with regard to errors by a surgeon who specialised in breast cancer operations.
In excess of thirty patients have complained about the allegedly poor standard of the work done by Miss Markandoo. These patients have contended that they have suffered unnecessary problems as a consequence of inadequate treatment. Journalists have used the Freedom of Information Act to discover more about what has occurred.
It would appear that the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has already provided £678,245 to 19 women to compensate for their allegedly surgery-related difficulties. It has been calculated that these compensation settlements average out at over £35,500 each. Since these compensation payments were made, it would seem that three more patients have been compensated for their anguish or damage. Therefore the bills for the alleged medical negligence are rising considerably. As some cases are yet to be settled, the final cost to the taxpayer is as yet unknown.
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust got a spokesperson to make the following statement:
“A total of 22 cases concerning Miss Markandoo have now settled and the total compensation payment in connection with these claims [is] now… £984,054.”
When the problems emerged, the surgeon’s performance was investigated and found to be unsatisfactory in certain areas. After a period of suspension, it was decided that the surgeon could not work outside the supervisory structure of the National Health Service.
