A Muslim girl has been awarded £3,000 in compensation after she was ordered to wear a red dress at work to serve drinks. The girl, thirty-three-year-old Fata Lemes quit her job when she refused to wear the dress. The tribunal denied her claims that the dress she was ordered to wear was sexually revealing, but still awarded her £3,000 because in her Muslim views the dress was too revealing.
Miss Lemes quit her job in the trendy London bar ‘Rocket’ claiming that she “might as well be naked” wearing the red dress. She stated:
I was brought up Muslim and am not used to wearing sexually attractive clothes.
She was awarded £2,919.95 for her emotional distress but her claim for compensation for £20,000 was rejected. The panel stated:
Her perception was that wearing the dress would make her feel as if she was on show. That perception was legitimate.
