Second Chance for Child Abuse Victims

Following a police investigation into allegations of child abuse in at least 66 children’s homes across Manchester, which resulted in an Order being made three years ago for Manchester City Council to pay out £2 million in compensation claims to 186 child abuse victims in what is known as a group compensation, a UK leading firm of solicitors has now been given approval by the High Court to put forward their case of appeal for a second group of alleged victims, from the mostly managed Manchester City Council’s children homes.

This number includes alleged child abuse victims who have since come forward with (more…)

Waiter sues Ritz Carlton alleging race discrimination

A hotel waiter is seeking $75,000 (£49,000) in compensation after his employer honoured a request by British guests not to be served by “people of colour”.

The lawsuit filed against the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Naples, Florida follows alleged racist requests made by a British couple know as the Morgans. It is claimed when the Morgans checked in on 28th February 2010 they specially asked the hotel manager not to be served by “people of colour” or staff with “foreign accents”. Their preference was then recorded in the hotel’s computer system with a note stating “This couple is very very prejudice“.

On 12 March, Haitian-born Wanter Tranchant, a Ritz Carlton employee for 15 years, claims he was prevented by his supervisors to serve the Morgans at the hotel’s Grill Restaurant. According to the (more…)

Single mother loses out on £1 million army compensation claim

A single mother has received more than seventeen thousand pounds after making compensation claims against the armed forces for their lack of childcare, after launching initial legal action for more than one million pounds, according to an article on the Daily Telegraph website.

Former Royal Signals corporal Tilern DeBique, who hails from St Vincent, lodged the compensation claims case after suffering sexual and racial discrimination due to the Army’s current policy on single parent foreign soldiers.

Miss DeBique was required to be available for duty around the clock, however she was unable to bring a relative to the country from her homeland in order to care for her young daughter, and as a result she was disciplined by the Army for failing to (more…)

£8 million compensation payout bill prompts appeal

A court decision surrounding compensation claims has sparked an appeal by the Catholic Church. As reported in the Northern Echo, a judge had decided that the Diocese of Middlesbrough was responsible for providing £8 million in relation to compensation claims made by victims of a child abuse scandal.

The abuse had gone on for three decades. Alleged physical and sexual mistreatment affected up to 142 people. It is alleged to have occurred at St William’s Community Home, situated in the vicinity of York. One alleged victim of the possible mistreatment, Mr Baverstock, has encouraged others to speak out about the abuse he contends was inflicted on him and others.

The case of possibly massive abuse resulted in the largest ever abuse-related compensation claims made against the Catholic Church. Between 1962 and 1992, boys were taken in from local authorities in the area – about 2000 boys went through the (more…)

£100,000 compensation payout for false imprisonment of refugees

As reported in the Cambridge News, a refugee has obtained a six figure payout for the unfair imprisonment of her and her four children. Their compensation claims were based on the fact that detention was used unnecessarily and also related to the point that the welfare of the children was not adequately protected.

Carmen Quiroga, from Bolivia, and her children were detained for 42 days after their arrival in Britain in 2002. They had fled violence in their country, but initially the authorities did not believe their story. The family have now obtained passports in this country.

The detention in Oakington removal centre was an unpleasant ordeal, especially for the three young girls. It seems that the poor conditions in the centre contributed to the children incurring psychological problems. A personal injury does not have to be physical for compensation claims to (more…)

Senior nurse wins £115,000 in injury compensation payout

Dr Sarina Saiger has won a six figure sum after she made a compensation claim. As reported in The News and Star, Dr Saiger was apparently the victim of considerable discrimination in the workplace. A tribunal has concluded that 16 of the serious allegations she made reflected her proven experiences.

Dr Saiger was a senior nurse who made compensation claims in response to racial discrimination she faced at the hands of North Cumbria University Hospital NHS Trust. Shockingly, her bosses told her that she was the:

“Wrong colour and culture for Cumbria.”

The outcome of what was allegedly a concerted spell of harassment was that Dr Saiger was unfairly (more…)

Personal injury in British hair salons

After the New Year has begun and our New Year resolutions have been made, some of us want to change our appearance for the better. We might join a gym or visit a hair salon, for example. Whether or not we sustain our urge to present ourselves to the world in a better way, recent research shows that we should take care. This might be very obvious when we are lifting heavy weights, but it is equally true when we are getting our hair dyed. (more…)
