pensioner-whiplashA pensioner has suffered whiplash injuries after he was travelling on a bus when it collided with another vehicle. The pensioner believes the bus driver was at fault for the road traffic accident as he was speeding and wasn’t driving with due care and attention.

The OAP (who does not wish to be named) suffered whiplash injuries and was showered with glass as the bus collided with a scaffolding lorry.

The 65-year-old man, from Denton, explained:

I was not happy at all. The bus driver was going like a bat out of hell.

Frankly he was going far too fast for the road conditions – more than 40 mph around blind bends. Speed is a killer. It was a dangerous and frightening trip.

The pensioner believes that busses should be fitted with seatbelts and tachometers, to make them safer and so that a track of the speed of the vehicles can be kept. The crash happened on April 30th on the 581 bus service in Denton.

I was not happy at all about the speed the driver was going. I had my knees pressed against the seat in front and was hanging on to the stanchion. As we came down the hill towards the A143 bypass, I saw a scaffolding lorry on the side of the road which was parked up or slowly manoeuvring. Our driver did not slow down but seemed to be aiming for a small gap of road. Suddenly he jammed on the brakes and there was a bang and two large windows on the side of the bus came in and I was sprayed with glass.

Speaking for the Anglian Bus service, Andrew Pursey, commented:

It was an unfortunate incident between two big vehicles on a country lane.

It is being dealt with by our insurance company and the police who are looking into it.

We still have to establish what speed the bus was doing. Sometimes on a big vehicle, the speeds can seem quicker than they are.

The pensioner will now be able to make claim against the bus company for personal injury compensation following the accident.
