A Kent schoolboy was seriously injured and could claim for compensation after apparently falling from the window of a school bus.
13 year old Matthew Harwood, a pupil at Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone Kent, was injured after he fell through a side passenger widow near the front of the bus. The incident occurred on his journey home from school.
It was initially believed that the fall had been an accident. However, witnesses later confirmed that the incident followed an altercation with other youths on the bus.
Matthew was taken to Maidstone hospital following the incident where he received treatment for a broken right arm and a lacerated right leg but was later allowed home following treatment.
His mother, Jo Harwood, said ‘I have heard nothing from the bus company‘. She also said that Matthew was recovering well but still walks with a limp. Matthew has now returned to school.
A spokesman for the bus company Autocar, which operates the school bus services in the Maidstone area, stated:
‘He was pushed out of the window by another schoolboy. The problem was caused by someone else pushing him and it was not the fault of the bus or the driver. He was pushed through an emergency exit’
The police were originally called to the incident and a police spokesman, Pippa Taylor, stated that the incident ‘constituted a serious assault, which the police shall be investigating further.’ They will be looking to interview a number of pupils at the school.
