Scottish government extends snow help fund

The Scottish government has revealed that it has extended the period during which people affected by heavy snowfall in the country during late 2009 and early 2010 can make compensation claims for damage that occurred as a result of the weather.

The institution announced recently that businesses and families that had suffered building damage as the result of severe snow could apply for a contribution from a three million pound government fund set up for weather related compensation claims up until the end of January.

However, the government has since revealed that ongoing extreme weather conditions mean that people now have until the end of April to submit their compensation claims, reflecting the further severe snow that affected Scotland during the first three months of this year.

The government has also reminded those hoping to apply that any temporary structures to replace damaged buildings, or alternative accommodation required in the result of severe structural issues must be complete before the end of March in order for their company to qualify for financial assistance.

Speaking to Scottish national newspaper The Scotsman, Borders MP Michael Moore praised the decision, claiming:

“the Borders was one of the areas hit hardest – and longest – by the snow and this announcement will provide our local farmers with a welcome boost.”

Many businesses throughout the United Kingdom suffered damage to their premises through extreme weather conditions, whilst Britain’s roads have been hit by a pothole crisis as a result of freezing temperatures. Even those firms unaffected by physical damage have lost earnings through hold ups in deliveries and staff unable to attend work during the period of heavy snowfall that affected the country in early 2010.
