Dr Sarina Saiger has won a six figure sum after she made a compensation claim. As reported in The News and Star, Dr Saiger was apparently the victim of considerable discrimination in the workplace. A tribunal has concluded that 16 of the serious allegations she made reflected her proven experiences.
Dr Saiger was a senior nurse who made compensation claims in response to racial discrimination she faced at the hands of North Cumbria University Hospital NHS Trust. Shockingly, her bosses told her that she was the:
“Wrong colour and culture for Cumbria.”
The outcome of what was allegedly a concerted spell of harassment was that Dr Saiger was unfairly dismissed. An assault against her was not properly dealt with and she seems to have undergone several traumatic experiences. These experiences were endured while she was an assistant nursing director in a hospital in Carlisle. The various specific incidents occurred between 2005 and 2008.
The situation was made more complicated because there seems to have been a tendency for managers to cover for each other. This kind of culture can be unhealthy and it can permit unethical behaviour to go on. It can also worsen the negative experiences of the person who is suffering from the mistreatment.
In the modern workplace, employees should not suffer from bullying or discrimination in silence. They do not have to sustain a physical personal injury in order to make compensation claims. Dr Saiger was an unfortunate victim of terrible behaviour, but she seems to have done precisely the right thing in standing up for her rights.
