A single mother has received more than seventeen thousand pounds after making compensation claims against the armed forces for their lack of childcare, after launching initial legal action for more than one million pounds, according to an article on the Daily Telegraph website.
Former Royal Signals corporal Tilern DeBique, who hails from St Vincent, lodged the compensation claims case after suffering sexual and racial discrimination due to the Army’s current policy on single parent foreign soldiers.
Miss DeBique was required to be available for duty around the clock, however she was unable to bring a relative to the country from her homeland in order to care for her young daughter, and as a result she was disciplined by the Army for failing to attend an evening parade as she was looking after her child.
However, the Central London Employment Tribunals reduced her ultimate financial payout after learning that the Army was prepared to relax its policy in order to give Tilern a five year posting in Dorset with childcare provided, which the 28 year old refused.
At the time of the Dorset posting offer, Miss DeBique was applying for more financially lucrative postings in Afghanistan and, as such, the tribunal ruled that she had made an error in judgment in the face of positive discrimination by the Army to accommodate her family situation.
The employment tribunal also claimed that Tilern had not made sufficient effort to find alternative work since she left the army in 2008. She was awarded total compensation claims of £17,016 when the case was concluded.
