School kids paid £3 million in compensation

Categories: Compensation Claim | Tags: , , | Written by Hilary on August 29, 2009

According to recent figures, nearly £3 million was paid to school children and their parents last year due to compensation claims made for injuries sustained while in school grounds.

This equates to more than £7,500 paid each day in compensation, £1 million more than was paid out in 2007.

Some of the injury compensation payouts are for innocuous accidents, such as the pupil from Derbyshire who was injured during Games and received £35,000 personal injury compensation.

A child in Suffolk was paid £9,000 when he was struck by a calculator, chipping one of his teeth.

Perhaps the most ridiculous claim was when a pupil in Fulham was paid £800 after he was struck by a lollypop that had been thrown to him by a teacher.

Susie Squire, a member of the Tax Payers’ Alliance, stated:

While no doubt some of these claims are legitimate it’s bonkers that many kids are getting cash just for falling over in the playground.

Each claim needs to be more carefully evaluated.

These claims are costing the education authority a substantial amount each year, which in turn affects the standard of education our children are receiving.

A personal injury lawyer in Wrexham has voiced his concerns over the growing trend of accidents involving the elderly on public transport. According to new research from Help the Aged and Age Concern, over 800 pensioners suffer falls on busses every day in the UK.

Solicitor Robert Williams explained:

Loss of balance due to the bus pulling away quickly, swerving or braking sharply, can cause quite serious injuries to older passengers.

Especially as they often take longer to sit down and get off the bus and are less likely to see items projecting into the aisles.

Broken hips and limbs, dislocated shoulders and whiplash are (more…)

Car insurance costs more because of Personal Injury claims

According to the AA, personal injury claims are becoming so common that the cost of car insurance is rising to accommodate the compensation culture in the UK. Car insurance prices are actually rising quicker now than they have done for the last ten years.

The AA state that insurance fraud and false claims are also responsible for the increasing costs of insurance policies.

The AA’s Simon Douglas stated:

Underlying premiums are rising more steeply than they have since 2000 because of rising costs.

There’s no getting away from the fact that the industry continues to suffer underwriting losses, which are predicted to be in excess of £240million this year.

As a result of false claims and personal injury claims, some insurance companies have withdrawn the option of third party insurance, and just 50% of insurance companies say they’ll offer insurance for young drivers under 21 years of age.

The builder, twenty-four-year-old Parminder Singh, fell from the roof in 2005 when a girder he was standing on snapped. He suffered personal injuries to his back, leg and head.

A work colleague, Mr Matthew Gilbert, died in the incident.

Mr Singh said of the accident at work:

I can’t remember much about the fall but I suffered nightmares for months. It was truly a miracle I survived. My leg was broken and my knee, back, jaw and teeth were injured. Life has been very difficult. I have been left with one leg shorter than the other and unless I move about my body seizes up.

According to doctors, Mr Singh only survived the fall because he was very fit as a martial arts expert.
