Teenager receives compensation for medical negligence

A Hertfordshire teenager has received a sum of £4.8 million in injury compensation due to medical negligence causing complications when she was born. As a result of being starved of oxygen when she was born at Royal Free Hospital 19 years ago, she has been left disabled. 19 year old Jodie Stock now suffers from physical problems and learning difficulties. She also suffers from epilepsy.

The teenager sued Royal Free Hospital’s managers, who admitted partial liability in the case.

As a result of the win, Jodie’s mother Janet Taylor receives £1.45 million in one lump sum and then a further £106,160 every year for care towards her daughter.

The injury lawyers for Jodie Stock stated that should she have been delivered by Caesarean she would have been born without injury.

Mr Paul Rees QC, representing the Health Authority, stated:

It has to be accepted that the decision making in the critical period was not of the standard Jodie and her mother could have expected.

One only needs to read the evidence of Jodie’s mother to understand just what the family have had to do over the past 19 years and what they will continue to do.

This will undoubtedly bring peace of mind to the family for the future and we wish them all the best for that future.

Sue Jarvis was the injury lawyer for Jodie Stock, she added:

Jodie has a good life expectancy and her mother and step-father, who have provided loving care over many years, can now be confident that her needs will be met once they are no longer able to care for her.
