On 7th July 2010, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (“APIL”) celebrated its 20th birthday. Based in Nottingham, the organisation was created with a remit to support the innocent and unwitting victims of unnecessary accidents. As a consequence of their objective, APIL has contributed to the development of standards for lawyers supporting those making a personal injury compensation claim as well as highlighting the potential risk of an accident at work to employers.
Denise Kitchener, chief executive of APIL, summarised the organisation’s achievements as follows:
“Our aim is always to protect the fundamental rights of injured people and to ensure access to justice and full redress for those whose lives are turned upside down by someone else’s negligence.”
Unlike twenty years ago, the majority of people today are familiar with the concept of enlisting expert support and advice to make a claim in respect of personal injury or accident caused by negligence. Most of us will have a friend or relative who has suffered an accident at work, a road traffic accident, or some similar misfortune. What initially appears as minor suffering can actually disguise major inconvenience. For example, a relatively innocuous broken right wrist can prevent its victim from working or driving, and can turn the most mundane daily task into a mountainous challenge.
With twenty years of hard work behind it, APIL has indirectly provided assistance to many thousands of people in overcoming the various challenges of personal injury in today’s accident-prone world.
