Incredible video footage of a dangerous incident on the A1(M) in Yorkshire has been circulated on the internet site YouTube. The half-minute clip shows a lorry overtaking traffic while a Renault Clio is apparently stuck on the bumper at the front of the cab.
As the Clio was being shunted sideways along the motorway at 60 mph, the occupants of another car filmed the incident. With the truck speeding past in the overtaking lane, one of the observers is heard to shout that the lorry driver has not noticed the car being pushed.
The female driver of the stricken Clio was later able to get out of the car and walk away.
The images have attracted comment worldwide, with the accident being reported by news networks around the globe. Some users of YouTube, an online video community, speculated about possible compensation, while others queried whether the film was genuine.
The haulage company involved, Arclid Transport, has reportedly confirmed that the incident was not a hoax. The company has opened an investigation and has informed the authorities.
West Yorkshire Police are looking into the matter, and the video has been brought to their attention. They will now work with the company to find out exactly what happened.
Questions are likely to be asked about how this sort of road traffic accident could occur and why the driver of the lorry did not notice that there was a car attached to the front of his vehicle.
