A whiplash injury has been estimated to occur in 20% of all car accidents. Whiplash usually happens upon impact. The neck “whips” back, as the body is then jolted forward. This is otherwise classified at hyper-extension. Hyper-extension is defined as an incident where muscles and ligaments become extensively and unnaturally stretched. In regards to hyper-extension/whiplash in a car accident, severe damage can occur at this time. The neck not only can unnaturally bend back, it can also unnaturally bend forward. This is known to happen when
the vehicle comes to a complete stop upon impact, or when the brakes are hit suddenly as in hitting the rear end of another car. This is known as hyper-flexion, and can do as much damage as hyper-extension.
Whiplash can occur within an instant during a car accident. Hyper-extension and hyper-flexion can happen in as little as 1/10th of a second. Studies show that even a car accident that happens at a relatively slow speed, the neck will actually move up to 18 inches in either direction.
Whiplash has happened to thousands of people in the UK. More often than not, the car accident that caused the whiplash was not their fault. Approximately 70% of all whiplash related claims receive some kind of compensation for their injuries. Compensation is awarded based on a few factors. The severity of the whiplash, and if will it become a permanent disability, are two factors that may alter the amount of compensation awarded to the claimant. Many individuals do not truly understand how severe whiplash can be. Often it is dismissed without the individual even attempting to receive compensation. Fact of the matter is, compensation is rightfully due to a claimant who is not responsible for the accident.
